Choosing the right bread is crucial for creating the best meatball sub experience. The two most popular options are sub rolls and hoagie buns. Sub rolls are typically softer and slightly thicker, making them perfect for holding up to the weight of the meatballs and sauce. On the other hand, hoagie buns offer a crustier exterior with a light, airy interior that adds a satisfying crunch to each bite. Ultimately, the choice between sub rolls and hoagie buns comes down to personal preference. For a softer bite, opt for sub rolls; if you prefer a crunchier texture, hoagie buns are the way to go.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-style)

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the Marinara Sauce:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon sugar (to balance acidity)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

For Assembly:

4 sub rolls or hoagie buns

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Extra parsley or basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, parsley, egg, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—don’t overmix to keep meatballs tender.

      Shape the Meatballs:

        - With wet hands, form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs (about 1.5 inches in diameter) and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

          Cook the Meatballs:

            - Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for about 20 minutes or until they're browned and cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (70°C).

              Make the Marinara Sauce:

                - In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute.

                  - Pour in the crushed tomatoes, basil, sugar, salt, and red pepper flakes (if using). Let the sauce simmer gently for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

                    Combine Meatballs and Sauce:

                      - Once the meatballs are done, gently add them to the marinara sauce. Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

                        Assemble the Subs:

                          - Start by toasting the sub rolls lightly in the oven. Fill each roll with 3-4 meatballs and generously ladle on the marinara sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

                            Melt the Cheese:

                              - Place the stuffed subs on the baking sheet and return them to the oven. Bake for another 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

                                Garnish and Serve:

                                  - Remove from the oven, garnish with extra parsley or basil if desired, and serve hot. Enjoy your delicious homestyle meatball subs!
