Ingredients

12 oz spaghetti

1 lb ground beef or turkey

1 medium onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes

1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

1 tbsp Italian seasoning

1 tsp sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup ricotta cheese

1 large egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Spaghetti: Begin by cooking the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Aromatics: Stir in the chopped onion and garlic into the skillet. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.

Mix in Tomato Ingredients: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Combine Cheeses: In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper until smooth.

Layer the Casserole: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large casserole dish, spread half of the cooked spaghetti as the first layer. Top with half of the meat sauce mixture, followed by dollops of the ricotta mixture. Sprinkle with a third of the mozzarella cheese.

Repeat Layers: Add the remaining spaghetti, then the rest of the meat sauce, and finish with the remaining mozzarella and the Parmesan cheese on top.

Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, let the casserole cool for about 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
