Ingredients

6 cups day-old bread, cubed ( brioche or French bread works well)

3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

4 large eggs

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for greasing)

Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Caramel sauce (for drizzling, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.

Prepare the Bread and Apples: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread and diced apples. If you're using raisins or nuts, fold them in as well. Set aside to allow the flavors to mingle.

Make the Custard Mixture: In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Then, gently whisk in the whole milk and heavy cream until the mixture is smooth.

Combine and Soak: Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apple mixture. Gently stir to ensure all the bread is soaked in the custard, making sure to push down on the bread a bit if needed. Let this sit for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the bread to soak up the custard.

Transfer to Baking Dish: After soaking, pour the entire mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard has set. You can check for doneness by inserting a knife in the center; it should come out clean.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm. Drizzle with caramel sauce for an extra touch of sweetness.

Enjoy: Slice into squares and serve on its own, or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top for an indulgent dessert!
